Cortisol is released from the adrenal glands when we are stressed and is an activity-enhancing hormone. Cortisol temporarily make us stronger, but it is also blocking the estrogen, and thereby reducing the reproductive performance, our fertility. During prolonged stress, the adrenal glands can become so exhausted that they cannot produce enough cortisol before awakening – which can make it difficult to wake up and get out of bed. Adrenal fatigue is a form of fatigue syndrome. Long time exposure to high levels of cortisol is harmful and contribute to fatigue, decreased muscle mass, increased appetite and decreased libido. It is important to keep the cortisol levels at the right level and balanced throughout the day and night. A disturbed sleep cycle can lead to an unhealthy level of the natural stress hormone cortisol.
